1. Literary Piece : All Because You Kissed Me Goodnight

by:Sandy Rolstan

I climbed up the door and opened the stairs,
Said my pajamas and put on my prayers,
Then I turned off the bed and crawled into the light,
All because you kissed me goodnight!

Next morning I woke up and scrambled my shoes,
Picked up my eggs and toasted the news,
I couldn’t tell my left from right,
All because you kissed me goodnight!

That evening at last I felt normal again,
So I picked up my mother and called the phone,
I spoke to the puppy and threw Dad a bone,
Even at midnight the sun was still bright,
All because you kissed me goodnight!

            Passage Picked:

            1. That evening at last, I felt normal again

            2. Even at midnight, the sun was still bright

  Reasons of choosing:

I chose these lines for they really play a significant role in the general idea of the poem. It is because first, the passage ‘1’ gives a distinctive impact from the overall structure. For a reason that it is the only one that breaks the pattern which is also known as the deviation. In contrast, almost of the lines are having the same style of structure which is confusing. And second, passage ‘2’ typically gives the general emotion that the person feels as reflected in the poem. In addition, it leaves a contrasting effect which is played by the figurative language ‘paradox’ or the norm of the poem.

Vocabulary Enricher/ Word Wizard

  • Climbed – to move or go up using your feet and often your hands.

*This word is used by the speaker to state that she climbed the door which is ridiculous.

  • Opened – to move and no longer over an opening.

*The speaker used this word to say that she opened the stairs after she climbed the door.

(the verbs in the first sentence of the poem which are climbed and opened are being used or placed in their opposite position.)

*It used to say that when the speaker woke up, the next thing she did was to scrambled her shoes.

Connector

Some connections I made between this poem and my own experiences is that there is someone who makes me believe that by the power of love, I can do everything but with limitations. This someone knows how to make me laugh in every single moment that we are together. I can be myself and I can be crazy. Even in a short message, advices and small efforts, he makes me feel special. Though we only meet on Saturdays, but it seems like every day.

In contrast, I saw some problems towards other people. In which when they get too much attraction that could lead in doing things in a wrong way and uncontrollable because of this love.

This experience of mine is related to the poem “All because you kissed me goodnight”, since the character of the poem is in love and because of that love, she felt crazy. Especially in the 12th line, “Even at midnight, the sun was still bright”, in which it shows the impact or the result of being in love.

Passage Picked:

  1. Yes, it was only a measly year and a half period but that was enough for me to witness what OFW’s do away from their family’s protective custody and away from their friend’s prying eyes.
  2. There are other unspoken sins of OFWs that is why I cringe whenever I hear the term given to them by the Gloria Administration “Ang Bagong Bayani” (The New Heroes).
  3. The poor Filipino who migrated in a foreign land just to choose to become poor somewhere else.

Reasons of choosing:

  1. I chose the first line because it states that even in a small period of time, the speaker considered it enough to see the doings of the OFW in other country and at the same time witnessed the way on how Filipinos change or reveal their true colors which are involving the immorality and thievery.
  2. Second line talks about the significance of the OFWs because they were given a term “Ang Bagong Bayani” despite their unspoken sins.
  3. The third passage speaks the generalization of the entire narration which is that Filipinos specifically those poor ones went to other countries to earn money for their family but the thing they did not know is that OFW prefer to migrate in a foreign land just to become poor somewhere else.

Illustrator

The illustration shows that all of the Filipinos are versatile especially the OFWs. They are known to every part of the world because of being hardworking. By that, they give honor and prestige to our country, Philippines.

Connector

Overseas Filipino Workers are greatly increasing in numbers. I could say so because almost of the family in our barrio has a relative outside the country. The best example is a friend of mine who has a relative who’sworking as a domestic helper abroad specifically in San Francisco, California. As I asked her, she told me that it is indeed a sacrifice when you have decided to work away from your country and your family. Her aunt has experienced how to be maltreated by her employer. Her aunt was still working even if it’s already midnight which is not considerable in the rights of every worker. Well, the worst thing happened was that she could not go outside even if it is their day-off and she could not eat in the right time. So the story could simply reflect the real scenario of almost of the said ‘Ang Mga Bagong Bayani’.

Questioner

  1. Why do Filipino people prefer to go abroad?
  • Filipino people prefer to go abroad and work there for some reasons and purposes that has a great effector impact to their lives and to their families.
  1. What could you infer from the story?
  • I could infer that the Overseas Filipino Workers who were tagged as “Ang Bagong Bayani” could not be applied to all of them. Though, it still gives appreciation and honor to them.

Summarizer:

The story takes place when the character left the Philippines because her husband is working in Taiwan and she must follow where her heart is. On the other hand, she also found a job as a computer factory worker. However, things didn’t come great as she expected. As she was working in the company, she has seen the different story of every OFW. Her co-worker has done a bad thing which is really not acceptable.
